How we compared
The comparison on our home page is meant to be specific and checkable, not marketing shorthand. Here is exactly what we evaluated and what each cell means.
What we evaluated
The current Chrome Web Store builds of OneTab 2.18 and Session Buddy 4.1.2 — using each product's publicly listed features, hands-on testing, and review of their publicly available extension code. Reviewed July 2026. We re-check when a competitor ships a major version.
What each cell means
- Yes — present, and we confirmed it through testing or the product's own documentation.
- No — we did not find the capability in the product's current build, its public documentation, or its shipped code. It means not found, not impossible; a future version could add it, and we'll update this if so.
- Limited session history — the product keeps some recent auto-saved sessions, but not a versioned history you can roll back to a chosen point.
- Available on paid plans — the capability exists but requires a paid plan (and, for cloud sync, uses the vendor's own servers rather than storage you control).
- Supported in some cases — works only under specific conditions, stated in the row below.
Row by row
Every backup is written, read back, and verified
Tab Keeper re-reads each backup and checks it before marking the save complete. We did not find read-back verification in the shipped code of OneTab or Session Buddy — both treat the browser's storage write as successful without confirming it.
Version history for rolling back to an earlier state
Tab Keeper keeps a rolling snapshot history you can restore by point in time. OneTab keeps a single working copy with no rollback. Session Buddy keeps recent automatically-saved sessions (marked “Limited session history”) but not versioned rollback of a saved collection.
Deleted groups recoverable from a 30-day Trash
In Tab Keeper, deleting a group moves it to Trash for 30 days with one-click undo. We did not find an equivalent recoverable trash in either competitor's shipped build.
Scan for recoverable data left by previous extensions
Tab Keeper can scan your browser's local storage for tab data a previous extension left behind. Marked “Supported in some cases” because it works only when that data is still present and the extension's format is one we handle — it is not guaranteed.
Cloud backup
Tab Keeper backs up to your own Dropbox or to Tab Keeper Cloud. OneTab's shipped build has no cloud sync. Session Buddy offers cloud sync on paid plans, to its own servers (marked “Available on paid plans”).
